Toll-ol
Listen to this:
The government could not spread the burden of imposing higher toll rates over a much longer toll concession period as it did not want toll collection to be a permanent feature in Malaysia, said Works Minister Datuk Seri S. Samy Vellu. He said the government had to put a limit on the extension of the toll concession period at between 30 and 35 years in order to avoid motorists from paying toll for life.
"If we allow the concession period to be extended to 60 years just to enable motorists to pay much lower toll rates now, it would result in motorists paying toll for life," he told reporters, here. [Bernama]
I suppose 30 to 35 years is just right.
You buy your first car between the ages of 20 and 25 years old, and by the time you retire, you don't have to pay toll anymore.
How considerate of the Government.
How nice of Samy Vellu to explain it to us.
How much dumber can you get?
The "scheme" only works if you don't introduce any new tolled roads beyond a certain date.
But at the rate the Government's going, tolled roads are set to be a feature of not just the current generation of Malaysians, but of several generations to come.
THAT ASIDE, how many newspapers and TV stations do you think will run this "news"?
BTW, the title of this post is a take on the Malay word "tolol", which means "possesing Samy Vellu-like intelligence".

Aisehman,
Some people are better off just remaining quiet. the moment they open their mouth, they are just confirming their own stupidity. In Vellu's case, it's mere "duhh"ism... Katak di bawah tempurung, or better still, katak di bawah rambut palsu...
Hello Sami Vellu, why are you so extremely STUPID? Are you Form 3 material or what???
Pak Lah should do us all a favour and remove such Form 3 Ministers... Really, apart from his ganster tactics, I don't see Vellu having any real brains...
Can Stupid Vellu put a cut-off date that the govt WILL NOT collect anymore toll?
Duhh!!! Samy Vellu, shut the duck up, you are looking absolutely stupid everyday!

Our Samy Vellu wants to increase his bank balance - what else to do with the growing rate of inflation? He wants to save not only for his grand children but also for his great great grand children.

Why is nobody asking SV to disclose the traffic projections for each and every one of these tolled highways at the outset?
This factor alone may clarify how much to charge and/or for how long.
As it is, these pay-as-you-go expressways are like shooting-fish-in-barrel monopolies sanctioned by our very own government.
Every time there is an increase, SV's standard birdbrained excuses are:-
a)to reduce the toll subsidy whilst quoting enormously hugh numbers that the government have to compensate the concessionaires.
b)our toll rates are the lowest in the region (yeah, right! Wanna apply the Macdonald index?).
and,
c)motorists have alternative 'free' routes (which I seriously doubt in some cases).
Any 'junior' minister can do this but SV, being who he is, feels that he can explain it better. Come to think of it, a parrot will be a welcome change. At least, if we call it 'bird-brain', it will be appropriate.
Perhaps, it is true that when your hair goes, so does your grey matter. And a toupee is a poor substitute for intelligence or virility or both.
Now, if somehow a bald parrot takes on SV in the next GE, it will definitely be a no-brainer. Umno will save a lot with just crackers and water.

If we look at this rationally (which means, most of Malaysia is excluded), tolled roads are not unusual. What is unusual is how "they" are selling the virtues of it to us. Singapore has tolled roads too, but it is used to control traffic. The Government builds the roads for all citizens to use, plus alternatives like good public transport if you don't want to pay toll. I can't quite say the same for us here.
Aren't Governments voted in to provide infrastructure such as roads to its citizens? In the past, we pay road tax for the right to use these roads. But of course, things have changed. The Government now outsources that obligation to a commercial entity, so using roads - a right which a citizen voted the Government in for - is now a business transaction. The marketing spiel? Well, the Government can't afford to build these fancy highways/roads and therefore if you want nice infrastructure in Malaysia, you pay a toll. The Government even outsourced their public transport system - which failed and had to be bailed out by, none other than the Government itself.
So my question is this. In order to achieve Vision 2020, does that mean the Government's greatest contribution is to "outsource" all these infrastructure development because they can't afford to do it themselves, but can afford to bail out if needed? And the cleverest thing a Government must do now, it seems, is to package the right words to use to the press so that we the citizens buy it?
At the rate we are going, our Government will soon become a "virtual" Government. Every responsibility of good governance and actual development is outsourced and they own nothing - but the right to turn on or off the tap. Let me guess, how soon before our dear Minister is none other than the hidden CEO of one of those commercial entities? Smells of Thaksinomics.

I cannot understand what Samy and others are talking about. The"Government" has to pay compensation to the highway operators and it is increasing the toll rates so that "the people" can share in the burden.Samy and his like talks as though "They" are the the "Government", doing the people a favour by the susidy paid.Dear Samy whether the "government"pay or the people pay, it is the tax payers money, the Government and the people one and the same. The funds are not the Ministers forking out of their pockets and from their inheritance. Please stop talking stupid and "think" whether there a way out of the idiotic agreements signed, thought out by people in the governmentwhose brains are located at their hindside.
Here is a solution,NATIONALISE" all such projects, highways, ipps etc etc and run them as State owned entities, unless the intention is to rob the people of the country to make a few cronies rich by continuing the present agreements with its onesided benefits.

PUTRAJAYA: Malaysians should embrace a charitable mindset and lend a helping hand to the poor at all times, not just during festive seasons, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Abdullah Ahmad Badawi said yesterday.
When you give higher toll rates, you help the government in collecting more funds. The people with cars, they can afford. You do not need to worry. When you pay higher water bill and electricity bill, it helps the government. When you agree to petroleum price hike and the removal of petroleum subsidy, you allow more funds to get into my pocket... oopps that was a mistake, please do not quote that reporters.
You see when we collect more money from the citizens, we have more funds to put into the 9th Malaysian Plan. That is the difference between me and my former mentor, the former premier. I ensure that we have more funds to do projects. In the end, the projects benefit me and my family. Oh, I mean the projects benefit the UMNO politicians... oh someone must be putting jampi on me. That is why we need to continue make use of the NEP to help the Bumiputera and continue to collect more funds from the people. The people are rich. They can afford another 30 cents to RM1 twice a day. Sedikit sedikit, lama lama jadi bukit. Hohohoho. This will be a merry christmas for me.
