When It Rains, It Pours

Says the Prime Minister:

The Monsoon Cup should be regarded as not just a sporting event but one that will also encourage tourism and the development of marine-based industries.

... Before this, people stayed away during the monsoon season, but now they visit the country and everybody has something to do.

... The success of the inaugural Monsoon Cup has shown that there is always a positive side to a negative situation and we can always make the best of it.

We have to change our perception to become more competitive as we try to achieve Vision 2020. I was happy to see the Monsoon Cup 2005 bringing us closer to the goal. [Bernama]

Sure.

Like the Prime Minister, I am confident that the people of Terengganu are delighted with the success of the Monsoon Cup.

BTW, according to figures from the Ninth Malaysia Plan, poverty in the state stands at 15.4% and hardcore poverty 4.4%, which are significantly higher than the rates in all other states in Peninsular Malaysia.

I'm sure the people there can relate to the elite sport of professional sailing.

Now, here's an assignment for you. In not more than 100 words, explain how the Monsoon Cup brings the people of Terengganu closer to the goals of Vision 2020.

Go ahead. Give it a shot.

Aisehman,

In six words - "Haji Patrick Lim for Chief Minister!"

Responding to your assignment request;

One of the goals of Vision 2020 is to have competitive Malaysians. The Monsoon Cup shows the people of Terengganu that Pak Lah is capable in bringing the elite and world class sport to Malaysia. As claimed, the Monsoon Cup is transmitted to billions of people worldwide. With the success of F1, it would be less of his prime ministership if Pak Lah cannot bring in something grander than the F1 which some people see as one of Tun M’s legacy. Terengganu is now in the eyes of the world, thank to the brainchild of Pak Lah. At the very least, people of Terengganu can now see how competitive Pak Lah is in competing with Tun M. That’s the spirit required in achieving Vision 2020.

You must be joking!
btw, I have failed in your abv assignment. Because I cann't think of any reason the Monsoon Cup can bring the people of Terengganu closer to the goals of Vision 2020.
On the contrary, the poor of Terengganu will be make poorer as these Fund/monies are being wasted to promote the Monsoon Club for the celebrity/rich to indulge in their "elite" games.
Again, our sleeping PM is talking nonsense when he is awake!

aisehman...here's my 100 words for the terengganu event.

"Ladies & gentlegerms"...it is without a doubt that the monsoon cup has bought TREMENDOUS benefit to the people of a SELECTED GROUP only.
It is also without a doubt that the EVENT does not have any correlation with the hardcore poor of TERENGGANU. They watch and see how come these foreigners n their boats can enjoy our beaches and drink champagne and what not..and here we are...thinking how we are to survive another day.

Malaysia really boleh

If this whole thing is a private initiative funded by private concerns i think it is actually very good la.

as for vision 2020, i think our nelayans can now learn to sail in the rough waters of monsoon and tangkap more ikans. that'll double their annual income la.

summore sure you need kids to jaga all the bentleys and the lambos and the astons, right? that'll inspire the budak miskins to work hard.

from what i heard, the Monsoon Cup is SIL's ideas to squeeze more money out from the government. the project even by pass the Chief Minister of Terengganu...straight to Patrick Lim.. what i heard is that Patrick Lim is running terengganu now... is it true????

Indeed there's a positive side to this negative situation. Try 'KPI'. Key performance indicators? No, nuthin' so banal. Khairy-Patrick-Idris.

AAB's most honest response:-

This has nothing to do with vision 2020 or anything to do with eradicating poverty in the state ..... this is a way to siphon out the "wang ehsan" from the oil to enrich my son-in-law and his best friend Patrick ..... end of story!

Well, here's my stab at it...

The Monsoon Cup will bring Terengganu closer to the goals of Vision 2020 as the fog of PAS has finally lifted. The people will now see how the UMNO states are urbane, civilized and modern. Where money can buy yachts and not rickety sampans. Where the stars are feted with caviar and not salted fish. And that the rich can play during the monsoon season, whereas you folks will have to find something to do if you don't want to starve.

Aspirational? Yes. Reality? Join the ranks for handouts. We do corrupt the innocent...

Man, we have to be more positive in our outlook. After all, bukankah kita ni "Malaysia Boleh". I mean all those mushrooming ikan bakar stalls by the sea front gonna make a killing. And what about the keropok lekor industry?? And the Pasar Payang (I hope I got that right) complex will be overrun with tourist ever willing to shell out foreign and local currencies for t-shirts made in Indonesia and Bangladesh. That's what vision 2020 is all about. Ooops, am I in the right blog...

i was told that there was no wind during last year's event.

how is it going this year?

The benchmark for poverty in Terengganu is RM1,500 per month per family of five, which is very much higher that the national figure. The main reason is to enable a larger number of the rakyat to be eligible for Wang Ihsan.

As the world watches the glamourous sport of sailing, locals start to understand the meaning of progress and realise what fools they have been for the past 50 years.
Unemployed graduates’ despair is transformed into infinite optimism as they too can be the next Monsoon Cup champion.
With renewed gusto and spurred on by new cash incentives for the first Malaysian champion, throngs sign-up for sailing courses offered by the government.
They no longer need to languish in Nowhere Land, they can sail into the new future while living off training allowances until the chosen one does the nation proud.

It is said that the two happiest days of a boat owner's life is the day he/she buys it and the day he/she sells it. The two happiest days of K's life? The day he married N, and the day he'll divorce her. Oh wait...was this supposed to be about the monsoon cup? Kinda got sidetracked with talk of sailboats and all...
