Kacau

Okay. Gotta be careful with this one. Don't want to kena for nothing:

Datuk Seri Abdullah Ahmad Badawi Monday night denied his son, Kamaluddin, and son-in-law, Khairy Jamaluddin, have benefited including getting government projects from his position as Prime Minister.

... "Kamal (Kamaluddin) never misused his relations with me. Kamal was never involved in local companies or concessions. No. He never asked any help from the government. Never in anything that needs bail-out," said Abdullah ... [Bernama]

But do you have to ask Daddy for favours to get the job?

No you don't.

And is it entirely accurate to say that "Kamal was never involved in local companies or concessions" ("Kamal tak pernah terlibat dalam syarikat tempatan ataupun konsesi-konsesi, tak ada")?

What do you call this?

Scomi Group Bhd is believed to have won a contract worth as much as RM50 million from KTM Bhd, the national railway company, to overhaul and maintain its wagons, sources said yesterday.

Mail Money was told that the contract is for five years, and will involve the maintenance and overhaul of as many as 1,000 wagons.

Scomi did not respond to questions sent by Mail Money over the last two weeks, but a senior executive confirmed the award of the contract.

The contract was awarded last year by KTM, after it had invited several companies to participate in a closed door tender exercise. [Malay Mail]

Isn't KTM a GLC?

And this:

Scomi Group Bhd will submit a bid by the end of March for a contract worth some RM120 million to make body parts for about 400 buses for state-owned Syarikat Prasarana Negara Bhd, sources said.

Scomi is also pitching for another job from a big GLC (government-linked company) to manage its fleet of 6,000 vehicles. [Business Times]

Isn't Syarikat Prasarana Negara Bhd a GLC?

And this?

Scomi Marine Bhd has received a letter of intent from TNB Fuel Services Sdn Bhd for a coal shipment contract for three years from Oct 1, with an option to extend for another two years, the company said.

Scomi Marine told Bursa Malaysia on April 14 that under the contract, it would be required to transport 500,000 tonnes (with 20% variation) of coal from Australia, Indonesia and South Africa yearly.

It said TNB Fuel Services would determine the actual quantity of coal to be transported and from which country upon finalisation of the contract. [The Edge Daily]

Isn't TNB a GLC?

And this:

Scomi Group Bhd, an oil services company, has won a contract from Petronas Carigali (Turkmenistan) Sdn Bhd to provide drilling fluids and other services for exploration works in Block 1, offshore Turkmenistan.

... it is estimated that the contract would contribute about RM57 million a year to the revenue of Scomi, it said in a statement yesterday. [Business Times]

Isn't Petronas a GLC?

I'm sure that in all of these instances, there were tender exercises. And I'm sure that everything was legally above board.

But how come Scomi was such a "non-entity" before October 2003? The timing sure sucks.

AND ON Khairy:

... he said his son-in-law took a loan to buy shares in ECM Libra.

"But, to say he grabbed projects, I've no evidence with me that Khairy has taken government projects," he said, adding that Khairy never met him to ask for projects.

Again, the question is not where your son-in-law got the money to buy the shares. And it is not whether he has been awarded government projects or not (in case you hadn't noticed sir, your son-in-law isn't exactly stupid).

The questions (yes, there's more than one) are as I asked in this post -- questions that neither you nor your son-in-law has answered.

And finally, this "explanation" is just sad:

"I am being frank. I don't know if (Umno Youth chief) Hishammuddin (Tun Hussein) is angry with me. Hishammuddin says "the Youth has decided, I have decided, I want to nominate Khairy for Youth deputy head, Pah Lah don't disturb ["Pak Lah jangan kacau"], this is Youth affairs," he added.

Hisham said "I want to nominate Khairy" ... now that's interesting.

For someone who "picked" KJ as his deputy, Hisham has hardly put up a sterling defence of his annointed one. Whatever the case, he's gonna have to put up one now.

Even more interesting is that Pak Lah said Hisham told him "jangan kacau".

It sounds like Pak Lah here is trying to impress upon us that not only was KJ as deputy youth chief NOT his idea, it was Hisham's, and that if Umno members were unhappy with Khairy, then don't blame the party president.

But what kind of party president so easily caves in to the demands of his youth chief?

"But what kind of party president so easily caves in to the demands of his youth chief?" The UMNO kind. Whatever good thoughts I have had for this part jaded a long time ago. Nothing the party members do ever surprises me anymore.

In fact I would be surprised if they do anything altruistically good for the country.

Posted by: bayi at August 8, 2006 07:12 AM

What is Pak Lah trying to prove by making such ridiculous statements? A human being can be dumb but not to such an extent. Macam ini Malaysia Mana Boleh? Alamak!

Posted by: bnaipal at August 8, 2006 08:34 AM

There is nothing wrong with the PM defending his son and son-in-law but they way he is doing it by being caught lying AND its NOT interpretation, again show the weak leadership skill and ONLY CONFIRM the suspicion.

I gather there are less critical masses out there that buys the spin but really, this thing just weakens the PM among those with a more critical minds.

I guess at least its a step forward for the PM for now but if Dr. M can spin it and make him look worst on this key issue he loses because his image of honesty will be cracked severely..

the best part is "kamal can't even earn a living in malaysia, he has to do his business in Oversea.." kekekek, is this guy too old, too dump, or what? Whatever answers given are only for those who only read the Star, NST, Utusan... etc..

Posted by: joejak at August 8, 2006 09:26 AM

That's what I thought when I watched the interview. I switched channel later because I know there'll be no big revelation.

I spoke to a few friends who do not know how to surf, they actually bought what the program fed them.

We can laugh now at the 'explanations' but there are many out there (who don't surf) who buy it.

Pak Lah, Pak Lah, why don't you maintain your "elegant silence" and not open your mouth and stick your own foot in ? You seriously believe that the rakyat will believe your protestations of innocence ? Why can't your relatives be SEEN to be clean ? Why do they "win" contracts with GLCs controlled by the Ministry of Finance, with you as the Minister of Finance ? Maybe you are unaware, as you have said many times, but by saying that you are unaware, are you not opening yourself to charges of incompetence ?

Please, we are not accusing you of anything, but can you be open and transparent with respect to the dealings of your relatives ? Is this too much to ask ? Can you answer Aisehman's questions without tripping over your own foot ?

I also find out PM's remark very comical.

"Whatever answers given are only for those who only read the Star, NST, Utusan... etc.."

Well, that's around a few million people already. By that standard, the PM's 'explanation' is a success.

Bear in mind that all he needs to do is convince the majority and Paklah seems to have done that. Good spin.

Now I'm waiting for what Dr M has to say.

Cheers.

Posted by: AmirHafizi at August 8, 2006 11:28 AM

Abdullah was ill-advised on his defence of his nepotism.

He should have said:

' If the management of the GLCs wanted to award contracts to my son's companies , what can I do?
Anak saya pun kena cari makanlah!'

'If umno youths wanted so much my son-in-law to be their deputy head, how could I interefere and say no, after all umno practises democracy.'

Again and again our PM has been caught lying. In the past he has promised IPMC, transparency, open tenders etc. but didn't fulfill his promises and this is equivalent to lying. Our PM is no more trustworthy. Mr. PM, please stop lying. Check your facts first before making your statement or "clarification". Also check your capability first before making promises. Don't make yourself look like a fool to the Rakyat.

And do I need to tell Minister of Information Zam-zam why I don't trust the mainstream media?

Malaysia-today has been down the past few days. Crackdown started?

Posted by: concerned at August 8, 2006 01:14 PM

Again, shocking as to how it's being spinned. I believe this issue will never rest..ever

Posted by: penangboy at August 8, 2006 02:14 PM

What does Badawi think we are???? seriously.

Posted by: Sri at August 8, 2006 02:26 PM

Isn't the KTM job just a slice of something bigger? Who got the other half? HALF??? Not 90%. Not 1%???? HALF you say????

Posted by: Whatever at August 8, 2006 04:44 PM

Scomi is one of the few malaysian companies that are actually doing well and managed well ..hence i dont see any reason why they cant get any government contracts...technically pak lah is right..they have NOT been getting any local project becoz of personal favours...but they could get projects going forward becoz the are technically competent ...what we need to push for is transparency in selection...

Besides that...nothing wrong with scomi ...if theyc an deliver give it tothem...better then some useless class F contractor who takes a downpayment and doesnt finish the job! Scomi is reputable!

Posted by: goks at August 8, 2006 06:23 PM

Simply brilliant piece. Keep up the good work man

Posted by: James at August 8, 2006 07:14 PM

What a joke. His son is not getting the business in Malaysia. I am very involved in the oil and gas industry in Malaysia. Talk about SCOMI and everyone knows they are going to win hands down. Talk to Tan Sri Hassan (CEO Petronas) whether he dares not to award contracts to SCOMI. SCOMI was nowhere before Pak Lah. Now, they are everywhere, winning every tender in oil and gas industry in MALAYSIA.

Posted by: LoyalMalaysian at August 8, 2006 07:47 PM

Regarding oil & gas biz, please check whether an AP is required to import the drilling fluid ingredients.

If I am not mistaken, Scomi is the only Malaysian company awarded the relevant AP, hence, having the monopoly of this type of business.

Perhaps, LoyalMalaysian has some information on this.

Competent or not, transparency is equally important.

Posted by: shar at August 8, 2006 10:10 PM

I would like to know whether any part of Scomi's business requires an AP... Can anyone shed some light?

Posted by: septic81 at August 8, 2006 10:27 PM

Most people never heard of Scomi until AAB became the PM. It seemed to come out no where and suddently shot into limelight.

Check Bursa Malaysia, you will find that as at 31/12/2002 Scomi Engineering was just a RM2 company with zero turonver.

Pure coincidence perhaps...

Posted by: Boleh! at August 8, 2006 10:45 PM

Aisehman, if you keep this phase, Jeff Ooi will be importing your skoops.

If you need to know more, than this coming Friday at Shangrila Hotel 9.00am (11.8.06) Ballroom, TDM will be giving a key note address to 300 industry captains of Malaysia..

Come and here the man from ' TALK WALKER '

Welcome back bro, good to read your blog, I reckon the 5 days hiatus did do more good for you with quality inputs, I prefer reading your blog than the big mouth JOi.Keep blogging....

I just cannot accept this "my son can't do business in malaysia".... no word in the english vocab to describe such statement.

Yeah, Malaysia Today has seemingly been blocked.

Posted by: hiden iden at August 9, 2006 04:28 AM

Welcome back, man. And seems truly refreshed and charged with more vim and vigour. And right smack into the 'enlightening' explanations of the one who was already comfy in maintaining the cool 'eloquent silence' posture. Exactement : posturing only, while the back-office gophers were scrambling for some unremarkable come-backs.
But, really tepid, and does little to comfort us poor souls of a regressing Malaysia. On the back of the various announcements of mega project plans
in the southern corridor and the north-western state with a congested island. The PM and his side-kick, KJ, may not be lying. But, their explanation and so-called answers are certainly misleading and diversionary, and inviting more pointed questions which do little to encourage trust and confidence that Malaysia can come out of this uncertain period of weak and floundering administration - really, going on and on like a headless chicken. Itu pun, belum di sembelih lagi. Was that a wrong shot for orang yang tak guna, sorry lah, mea culpa maximus!!

While we, on the net, are becoming more and more aware of the shortcomings of this admin, and the propagated misdirections of the mainstream media, the larger mass of the rakyat at large who have little or no access to the net ( despite the puny and uncommitted efforts of the government of the day to bridge the widening digital divide ), are reading and, in most cases, believing the simple general explanations and misrepresentations of the leaders of this admin. And, while we hear some MBs and CMs parroting HMV ( His Master's Voice )and sycophantic political statements, we have yet to hear more substantial messages from those other UMNO leaders who should be currently dominant - you now who have been missing in action in the mainstream media - unless they, too, are being blacked-out or, more probably, have little to say about this admin.

A proposal ( which I am sure must have been proposed already ) : could the key bloggers publish their articles / and critical & relevant responses from the readers / contrbutors in a serialised format, which could be sold and distributed to the masses for general information - schools, colleges and universities, pasar malams, selected sundry outlets, fast-food joints, wet & dry markets, bus stops and train stations, unions and work-force groups, mosques, churches, temples, teh-tarik stalls and gerai-gerai makan di merata tempat. Would you need a printing / publisher's license for that, or do you just print and distribute? In this way, the general joe public can also be made aware of alternative sources of information which should provide enough food for thought, instead of just believing the government's mouthpieces via mainstream media - papers & broadcasts.
Such bloggers newsletter can just be somethig simple like what Aliran's, and affordable ( cost-recovery only ).

Carry on with your articluated and punchy comments which are most timely and sensible in this increasingly insensible atmosphere of transparency and freedom and justice and respect and clear conscience - raher hazy days, eh!

Cheers

Aisehman,

Further to what Gerubuk mentioned, you and your readers are digging up some good sh*t here. Whilst it is gratifying for some of us to at least know the bigger truth, how do we get non-netizens have access to this information.

Is there a bloggers' association which can distribute newletters to its members, similar to Harakah.

There must also be a concerted effort to get younger, newly eligible voters involved in propagating 'political' awareness lest we get to a stage whereby voter turnout will dwindle due to apathy.

The next GE will probably have about 4 million new voters according to statistics stated recently. Imagine the power for change.
