Non-Kosher Goods And Services
KJ is instigating a boycott of goods produced by companies that support Israel:
"I will suggest that we distribute a list of the companies which are clear Israeli supporters according to their profits so that we are aware of who are helping Israel," he [Umno Youth deputy chief Khairy Jamaluddin] said.He said the people should be informed of these companies so that they could use their right as consumers whether they wanted to continue using their products. [Bernama]
Can't wait to see the list. But "designer" coffee drinkers should already take heed:
Khairy said the movement Friday received an e-mail on an international coffee shop chain allegedly supporting Israel and sending funds to the zionist regime. He said if there was truth to the claim, the people must be told so they could make their own assessment whether they wanted to continue supporting the company which has a chain of shops in the country.
The allegations against Starbucks (yes, Starbucks) are not new. You can read about it here.
The site also has a list of companies accused of supporting Israel.
If you're gonna go on a boycott as per the list, then be prepared to do without CNN and ICQ, movies, Star TV and National Geographic, Coke, biscuits, Mickey Mouse and Disneyland, make-up (here, here and here), personal care products for babies and children, Nescafe, Milo, Maggi, and KitKat, tissues, diapers and sanitary pads, handphones, shoe polish, air fresheners, the Wonderbra and bakery products, computers (here and here), and fast food, among other things.
Worst of all, if you're a Gunners fan, then I am truly sorry. Blame it on KJ ... he's rooting for Man Yu.
I WONDER how, and how many, Malaysians would be affected if there really was a boycott of goods produced by "companies supporting Israel"?
Think about it, while KJ maintains his posture.

In a truly global economy, it becomes difficult to not do business, directly or indirectly, with a given country. Even with US-led sanctions against Myanmar, Sudan, Iran, and such, US goods have made it through. Such is the nature of globablization, IMHO.
Well, KJ can call for whatever boycott he wishes. If he does, he has to lead the way and practices what he preaches.
If he truly feels that by boycotting the yet-unnamed businesses can bring peace to the Middle East, more power to him.
I, on the other hand, don't think it will achieve jack.

I've always wanted to work for NatGeo. This changes nothing.
Does this mean that all those Milo billboard ads are coming down?

I'm sure he could just survive by eating Kangkungs from papa-in-law's backyard. =)

Why instigate the boycott and, almost in the same breadth, said it would not be effective?
More instructive, perhaps, to read about “Jews Behind Pantai (and other Malaysian companies)” at http://rockybru.blogspot.com?
You tell me…

Do you get the feeling that KJ pressed the self-destruct button and he can't stop the countdown.

KJ is really a hypocrite. He works in an investment company that deals in global investments. Come on man, down the line, he directly or indirectly must deal with an israel linked company.
Plus his dealings with Singapore should also be looked at, if he is so anti-israel, just remember that the Israeli army helped out with training the S'pore army when it broke off from M'sia.
KJ is a cheeky slag.

KJ:
While you are at it, how about boycotting every country that supports Israel - like the US, UK, Australia, Singapore and Japan ? Then your father-in-law would have a great and noble mission ahead of him - emphasising on self reliance based on an agricultural economy. Then we can take a step further by kicking out all the foreign companies that are cronies of these Israeli sympathisers. Let's deem their investments as illegal and nationalise them. Let's go backwards like Myanmar.
OK, OK, to start off with this strategy, would you like to burn your Oxford degree in public first ?

KJ doesn't care if many Malaysians are out of a job cos he is an investment banker with lots of $$$. Malay youth will suffer most from his moves. But what about ECM Libra? They have done lots of deals with Spore companies. any indirect links with Israel???
Posted by: rocky at July 30, 2006 01:52 PM
hey, khairy, stop this nonsense about boycotts. pse talk more about pertinent issues in the world.
Posted by: jango ang at July 30, 2006 02:31 PM
If Mahathir's "Buy British Last" did not work, do you think one non-entitious idea like this will??? Fat hope!
Posted by: Billy at July 30, 2006 02:45 PM
khairy,
you think you are powerful enough to terminate Israel? save your time , you may do something meaningful in your entire life like polishing AAB's leather shoes.
Posted by: rawmeat at July 30, 2006 03:15 PM
this is so stupid. another reason for me to go LOL. a boycott is not the answer at all. if a boycott follows through, in the end who will suffer, but the small time men and women who are employers of the companies.
what's with KJ? why he suddenly become so fiercely passionately against isreal/US?
another thing i hate is when KJ used "we malaysians". for god's sake khairy boy, speak for yourself! (and your UMNO!).

They could, of course, ask Intel to shut down its operations in Kulim and Penang.

Well...Well...Well...
First KJ need to check his shares on lists of company that have a partnership with these Israely company. Second he must refrain from taking or consuming those goods mentioned.
Or else we should exposed KJ whenever he visited any of these outlets and hey mob on him. Can someone chech his trash, could you.
I think the Business as usual for ECM-Libra yeah.

Yeah....talk about hypocrisy at it's worst...I'd like to see KJ send his pompous, self righteous butt all the way to south of Lebanon now and see how he hold's up...No Milo and KIt KAT rations for ya while u're at it..FOr someone who has little (or no) understanding of the vast complexities of the Mid East crisis, he sure has the gall to speak up for EVERY Malaysian in this country..Sorry, bub. Hezbollah and Hamas don't actually measure up very well when it comes to credibility...SO to heap all the blame onto the US (Who DIDN'T even start this mess in the first place!) and Israel without even making the slightest mention of the kidnapped Israeli soldiers which precipitated this...MAkes me wonder how you earned that OXford degree of yours in the first place....MMm, yup, while we're at it, i guess boycotting or even banning all those products mentioned above will solve the current issues eh? GUess we can always adopt NOrth Korea's "Juche' ideology of self reliance and focus on agriculture for our country's future..and be buddy-buddy with oh-so noble/righteous regimes like Iran, Cuba and Zimbabwe (oh wait, we already are)

Khairy is not against Israel or anyone. He is retaliating against his father-in-law like a real jouvenile. Either he has been ticked off by his pa-in-law or has been kicked off because of causing heartache to Nori. And what better way then to do this and more. Can't imagine how many times in the last week Pa-in-law has had to apologise for son-in-laws antics.
Maybe from now Khairy will not be using toothbrush and toothpaste. Toothbrush got stuff in there coming from companies that can be said to support Israel. Toothpaste too has got stuff inthere that come from Israel.

Someone do talk to this brat KJ that not all Malaysians care about his pet hates of the moment. My family [a large bunch at that] and I don't have a great deal of affection for the terror organisation that has invited ruin on Lebanon. As a matter of fact I vouch that if the Hezbollah group gets what it deserves,i.e. put out of action, none of my extended family members will shed any tear.
Our top worry is a need today to maintain the continued prosperity of Malaysia. Besides we cannot understand the boy KJ. The Arabs that are now coming over here in droves as visitors and shifting substantial investment funds to Malaysia don't quite like the Iranians - Hezbollah's paymasters- and they have publicly made it known. Doesn't KJ read the news? The antics of KJ may worry our Arab friends, and hey what's stopping them pulling out their money, if they think Malaysia is leaning towards the Iranians [read shites].

Singapore supports Israel....
So Mr KJ....boycott Singapore lah...
You know that people link you with Singapore and indirectly link you with Israel...
so this is just a show...to clean your name..tell you what..it wont work.

A boycott will hurt the Palestinian people. Why? Because the Palestinian territories are highly dependent on Israel for import and export of goods.
About 140,000 Palestinian workers worked in Israel representing 23.5 percent of the Palestinian workforce.

you know some of these comments are pretty self-righteous. What have you done in response to the attrocities? haven't you all in some teeny way tried to make a difference - at the very least by spreading information about the injustice and attacks, emailing pictures, forwarding news? or perhaps you've done nothing at all, typical apathy, complaining from the sideline, you sympathise but you take the 'but what can i do' standard line.
Fine, a boycott might not be the best way to help in such a conflict, with its long history, its complexities, its persistence. but i think it's pretty sad to belittle small attempts by ordinary people, who do care and are trying to do something. Small things can make a difference, every little bit can help. if everyone thought that their spare change or an sms donation, or passing out a leaflet on awareness meant nothing, there would be many who would not receive the help that they've gotten by a collective effort through these means.
let khairy find out which companies, then, so that he'll know if he's being a hypocrite because certainly he has to lead the way by example, so let's see. the rest of us should find out too, then we make our own decisions, live with our conscience.
I also think aisehman is trying to lead us on. aisehman shows us the text of the news reports which states that people should be aware of such companies so that they can make their own assessment as a consumer. That's different from calling for an outright boycott, it's asking for people to be more informed, to be aware of how companies which they support or deal with spend their profits - what's wrong with that? You used the word 'boycott' aisehman, not Khairy. Furthermore, maybe even bringing up the issue of companies supporting zionists wasn't appropriate for khairy to suggest (of course people don't bother with nuances and will assume boycott), but you aisehman appear to take the stand that nobody should give up any creature comforts because it would really 'affect' Malaysians. And if you want to be fair in your criticism of boycotts, you should've mentioned the Utusan Malaysia article where Tun Dr Mahathir called for a boycott of the US dollar.
come on lah, i think you're being overly influenced by your dislike for khairy whatever the reasons are, you don't have to bash everything he does and anything and everything connected to him. That would be akin to people pigeon-holing you somehow, even tho you look at wide-range of issues. You make me wonder if you have a personal axe to grind wi KJ.

semicynic:
>>> The history of modern Israel is a history of struggle against incredible odds. It is a history of winning against incredible odds.
You think some guy thousands of miles away shouting "Israel is the Devil" is gonna make them quiver in their boots?
I know this. You know this. Khairy Jamaluddin knows this.
>>> "I also think aisehman is trying to lead us on"
So what do you call this, if not "leading" people into a boycott?:
"I will suggest that we distribute a list of the companies which are clear Israeli supporters according to their profits so that we are aware of who are helping Israel," he [Umno Youth deputy chief Khairy Jamaluddin] said.
>>> "you aisehman appear to take the stand that nobody should give up any creature comforts because it would really 'affect' Malaysians"
A boycott of those products would hurt Malaysians working for the companies that are involved in making the products available here more than it would hurt the Israelis or Americans.
In case you hadn't notice, the Malaysian consumer market isn't exactly crucial to the survival of the makers of these products.
>>> "you should've mentioned the Utusan Malaysia article where Tun Dr Mahathir called for a boycott of the US dollar"
The reason why I didn't mention it is because it makes sense and is feasible.
Before you or anyone else accuses me of being a Mahathir supporter, I suggest you type "Mahathir" or "Dr M" in the search tool for this blog, and read what I've written.
>>> "You make me wonder if you have a personal axe to grind wi KJ"
The guy with the axe to grind is Mahathir, not me.
But have you noticed how difficult it is to come across any really positive remarks made in all honesty about KJ?
Why is that, you think?
Posted by: Aisehman at August 1, 2006 12:55 AM
You guys know perfectly what he's up to don't you?
He's trying to score cheap political points and put his face up there for all to see. Some might even sympathise with his bandaged hand.
You think he really give 2 hoots to the Arabs? I don't think so. He's one of the greatest hypocrite I ever seen.
