Moving Up
You should've seen it coming when Bank Negara left interest rates alone earlier this week, despite inflationary pressures:
Electricity tariffs will be raised an average of 12% from June 1, Energy, Water and Communications Minister Datuk Seri Dr Lim Keng Yaik announced Wednesday. [The Star]
Maybe we'll even see water rates go up, not to mention the inevitable increase in the price of fuel.
For many of you, your salary increment this year has amounted to more or less nothing, thanks to inflation.
But you know what the worst part is?
It is that if we continue to run this country and do "business" the way we're used to, no amount of tariff increase or subsidy reduction will do us any good, because all we would be doing is take the wastage to a higher level.

Well done and well said Aisehman.
I think the only way for us to continue here is to take the cue from the recent Sarawak election, say put at least 30% seats of oppositions into the parlimen.

to be fair, the government is justified in increasing the tariff rates. cheaper power rates means consumers take things for granted as what is happening now. so for once i hail the government's move. in fact the water rates should also go up.

It's time again to go to bed earlier and give up hours of watching the idiot box. Soon night soil will be in vogue again for biogas energy. If more people were to drink their urine every morning which some health freaks swear it's good for your health like a former Indian PM did, this newater can help to cut down tap water consumption. We must count our blessings before cursing the government.

Basically I think it's the wrong timing, what with the fuel hike and all. Also the one-sided deals with the IPPs has also put off a lot of people who think that TNB does not deserve a tariff hike. I've posted at my blog on this.

What goes up must come down; interest rates go up and my faith (in this government) comes down. But that's us common Mats and Davids and Balas whining.
With spin a wrong can be a right. This administration can make RM4.4 billion disappear just like that! No shame, no remorse.
They will increase the interest rates further before you know about it, and Bank Negara will issue a statement to say it isn't going to affect the economy. And things will be alright.
If 1998 had happened eight years later (like now), we would be a beggar nation now and would still not know it.

aiya, jango.
minyak naik, electricity increase, surely water naik also la. lepas to biskut marie and karipap pun naik harga also la.
actually, i think kalau we all not take things for granted pun harga naik juga. sudah nasib dapat govt ini macam punya...
sometimes wish i m a singaporean, got cheap water from johor at 3 sen per 1000 gallon (this one guarantee tak naik punya). malaysia boleh!!!

"cheaper rates means consumers take things for granted ........ the water rates should also go up.
According to this logic, almost any public services the consumers take for granted, the hike in rates is justified. Well, not only the water but sewerage, quit rent, public transport, hospital charges, income tax, interest rates and so on should also go up because these are the essential services consumers take for granted.
Conversely, the salaries of the government servants should also go up because consumers take the civil service for granted.

Water, electricity, houses these are very basic human needs, it must not be taken away from them.
Currently, if u cannot pay for ur water, ur water will be cut, no water even for drinking. The poor will suffer, no decent clean water, health cost increases, transportation cost to hospital increases....these are killing the poor, Pak Lah would better use a knife to stab the poor in the back, it is more humane.
We can, with modern technology to easily provide these basics need free (limited amount 4 daily consumption) without jeopardising the water/energy market. However, this government is corrupt and incompetant that any solution would bound to be non viable as need lots of undertable money.

mikamiki,

A single shot to the back of the head is best, a la Nazi - guaranteed to deliver.

Now we've got some more smart ass NST reporters telling us to "Adopt lifestyle changes to lower your monthly bills" (NST, 25-May-06, Pg6). Among the clever ideas were:
1. Install ceiling fans to circulate air in the room. Even at full blast for 24/7, it still costs less than the air-cond... er, let's start with Jalan Riong.
2. LCD/plasma TV sets use less power than older models... I still can't afford one...at any rate, with the 3 TVs in my house on for 5 hrs/day, I consume about 45 units/month (source TNB, in the Star), totalling RM13. Assuming the plasma TVs cost RM8k and I trade my 3 TVs for 1 plasma set and it consumes NO power, it will take 615 months to realise the savings on my power consumption.
3. Refrigerator Do's and Don'ts: Don't open and the door. LMAO

for once pak lah is very very right. we have to bite the bullet if we want to progress. we must think of the bigger picture. the trouble with malaysians is that they have a myophic view. they want everything cheap and good. malaysians are known for their wastage. just look around. frankly, what is 12 per cent increase to most of us. on average a consumer would probably pay about RM13 extra a month. that is small change. so don't gripe. take it like a man.

Jango,
I beg to differ, its not about increasing the price thus increasing quality. Quality was never in the picture, its about the goverment passing the buck to us.
Wonder why joe public would not hesitate to buy a mercedes benz at a higher cost with little complains & complain about the higher cost of Tolls? Its because they are fed up with money being paid for no reason.
I mean, what are the cost cutting methods TNB took before imposing the increased rate? All the top management are enjoying a good salary. They dont care.
With overheads sky rocketing & machines under utilized, who wants to support these type of business. Unfortunately us because theres no alternative. We are not in control of the management, someone else it. When they tell us to pay more, we pay, no questions asked.
If you tell me TNB had done their homework well & explored all avenues before taking this step, then Il gladly comply, but the problem is they had been hogging the goverment for the past 2 years before doing effective alternative study.
This is what I call 'nintendo'

The beginning of all these price increase problem has to do with Dr. M's pegging the ringgit too low for too long. If the ringgit was allow to appreciate all these price increase would have been muted - unavoidable but muted. Its classic BN government to find bogeyman for problems that they create or could avoid. Since May 13, 1969 went UMNO blamed the riots on DAP and Gerakan, went they caused it, they have been doing the same thing over and over again, the biggest one being the NEP.

"decent clean water"? you call the filth coming out of our taps clean?
Posted by: desparil at May 26, 2006 09:27 AM
May i touch on this 'decent clean water' issue. I'm sure by now we all know our tap water is not so safe to drink...in the long run. Even boiling tap water only kills the bacteria but not the dozens of chemicals used to treat the water. These chemicals are the ones that causes diseases if consume in the long run...examples are cancer & alzheimer (from lead in the water).
I live in Australia and i thought the water taps here are safe to drink but no way ho zay man...it's full of clorine and about 15 other chemicals. I did a tap water test in my home and i was shocked. This is Australia water you know. Apatah lagi water in Malaysia.
The water corporation here says it's still safe to drink tap water because it has been treated. Padahal...they know these 15 other chemicals will not do harm in the short term. But it has been researched that it does have harmful effects in the long term. The water corporation stand is....most water usage is used for washing & cleaning & for gardening. They are not going to spend so much money & time treating water with safe chemicals when most of it goes back to the drain. This is out of topic but i thought it's kinda important as we rely on water everyday.
So now, i drink filtered water.

bigjoe probably right, dr M shouldnt peg the ringgit back then and instead be a good IMF boy. if he hadnt done that, we ll probably be using US dollar in our daily transactions by now...or maybe singapore dollar... more style lor... he he he... something like in Cambodia... anyway, nice view at siem reap...
