Wrong Message

USMAN BAWANG says:

What kind of message are we sending the Government by continuing to harp on NST's mistakes (if it ever was).

We all are getting confused about the reasons why we hated the NST in the first place. And now, judging by our response, we are all going to encourage the very culture of journalistic cowardice that we ourselves abhored.

We have the right to discuss this online. And to decide for ourselves IF the NST even had made a mistake. But please, this matter should be resolved, not in Putrajaya or anywhere else, but in the Letters to the Editor section in the NST and by exercising our daily right to pay RM1.20 in the morning.

It is shocking to see progressive and forward looking people, like bloggers, to continue calling for NST's head. We all are only tripping on our own shoe-laces.

We all should stand together to support the NST in this issue, and also call for the repeal of the PPPA and to restore Guang Ming, China Press and Sarawak Tribune to its previous condition.

What kind of signals are we sending to the Government huh?

Well said.

But other people should not be held responsible for whatever befalls NST due to the newspaper's own recalcitrance.

There was a way out, but the NST chose not to take it.

The newspaper still owes Muslims here a proper explanation and an apology.

Call me indecisive, fickle minded or even showing obvious lack of wisdom. After reading both Jeff and aisehman blog, I do agree most of the views put forward (that NST should apologise, that NST should be suspended, that fair punishment should be accorded to all or that of Jeff…)

But the most recent post from people like usman and hann (included below) makes me think of the whole issue in a different perspective. The last thing that I want to see is the suspension of NST (not that I read it) or any other paper. And yes, a sincere apology from NST is a must.

Aren't we all guilty of muddying the waters so much to the extent that we can't see clearly now what's terrifying us so much in the pond in the first place??

The biggest mistake that started all this was probably the decision of the govt to get itself involved in the controversy of the Danish cartoons. Isn't the govt playing up to the gallery by suspending ST without so much as a show-cause letter and the subsequent suspension of GM. Since it was perceived by the masses that the govt has acted unfairly severe towards the 2 papers, the logical conclusion now is why should NST be treated with kid's gloves?

The govt has no qualms exercising its might when it suits their purpose to do so. Now the people rightly demand that there should be no show of favouritism - the merits of the present case not withstanding.

There is a saying that's so apt here - if you wish to play with fire, be prepared to get burned.

In the first instance both Guang Ming, China Press and Sarawak Tribune should not have been suspended..now that is history..what the authority should do now is to restored their permit...and I do not believe action should be take toward the NST....The reason why people are angry with NST is because what happen to Guan Ming and Sarawak Tribune..Had it not been, no one would care about that cartoon in the NST..Most would have enjoy the cartoon and forget about it..

Sincere apology from NST? I bloody hell doubt Hishamudin Aun and Brendan could offer one.
