Vote Or Else

Are you crazy?

An academician on Saturday called on the Election Commission (EC) to introduce a compulsory voting system to ensure a higher voter turnout, especially among the younger set, and for voters in urban and rural areas to exercise their democratic rights.

Dr Nelson Ilan Mersat, Head of Politics and Government Studies Programme in the Social Science Faculty of Universiti Malaysia Sarawak (Unimas), said the system practised in Australia proved to be a success. [Bernama]

You want the fickle youth, who are naturally anti-establishement and wont to rebel, to vote?

Is it not irreconcilable - compulsion on the one hand, and democracy on the other?

Political parties like Umno set up Putra/Putri etc to garner their votes and so do the opposition. The anti-establishment type probably would rather be watching Astro than to waste time, transport expenses, queing up to vote in a system where one side is programmed to win by hook and by crook or else hints of May 13 and emergency rule may be actualised again.

Wouldn't the compulsion jolt us out of our apathy and start paying a little more attention to what our rulers really are like? Too many of us need a reason to vote. A fine would be a good one...

Botak, why not? Spoilt vote.
