Fundamentally Unsound

I just read through the comments on Jeff Ooi's blog on the cartoon uproar.

It would seem that some Malaysians don't see what the fuss is all about.

There are those who are of the opinion that only "fundamentalists" are upset.

That would be a mistaken belief, I assure you.

By all means, lets discuss religion in this country.

But should we also have the freedom to make fun of the faiths of others?

Who shall sketch the first caricature?

I have given up on Jeff Ooi's blog long time ago...Jeff manipulates the posts by only publishing comments that in agreement with his own views. Those who post their comments only seems to fan racial and religious intolerances further. There is no intelligent discussion or debates..it is all venting of anger and expression of intolerence.

BE TOLERANT, MUSLIM BROTHERS & SISTERS

I tried to surf the internet and read as much as possible the reactions over the publication of caricatures which ridiculed Prophet Muhammad s.a.w..

I am relieved that the majority are against such irresponsible publications.I append below some of the important views expressed thus far:

BUSH ADMINISTRATION: "We find them offensive, and we certainly understand why Muslims would find these images offensive. Anti-Muslim images are as unacceptable as anti-Semitic images," which are routinely published in the Arab press, "as anti-Christian images, or any other religious belief….Still, we defended the right of the Danish and French newspapers to publish the cartoons. We vigorously defend the right of individuals to express points of view."

United Nations, Secretary General KOFI ANNAN: "I am distressed and concerned by this whole affair…I share the distress of the Muslim friends, who feel that the cartoon offends their religion. I also respect the right of freedom of speech. But of course freedom of speech is never absolute. It entails responsibility and judgment…I urged the Muslims to forgive the offense and move on."

French President JACQUES CHIRAC defended free speech but also appealing "to all to show the greatest spirit of responsibility, of respect and of good measure to avoid anything that could hurt other people's beliefs."

Major American newspapers, including The New York Times, The Washington Post, The Los Angeles Times and The Chicago Tribune, did not publish the caricatures.

"Readers were well served by a short story without publishing the cartoon," said Robert Christie, a spokesman for Dow Jones & Company, which owns The Wall Street Journal. "We didn't want to publish anything that can be perceived as inflammatory to our readers' culture when it didn't add anything to the story."

Most television news executives made similar decisions. On Friday CNN ran a disguised version of a cartoon, and on an NBC News program on Thursday, the camera shot depicted only a fragment of the full cartoon. CBS banned the broadcast of the cartoons across the network, said Kelli Edwards, a spokeswoman for CBS News.

Only ABC showed a cartoon in its entirety, lingering over the image for several seconds during Thursday's evening news broadcast and on "Nightline." (ends)

I would like to urge our Muslim brothers and sisters to be tolerant and resist the provocation. It is a test of patience and tolerance.

I trust that you know how to deal with the provocation wisely.Islam is no doubt a great religion and as Muslims you have your responsibility in portraying the greatness of your religion.

The world is watching you, brothers and sisters.

ha ha ha.... the issue is....not whether it is right to criticise or poke fun at other ppl's faith. Of course it is never right to make fun at another's belief. The important thing here is... how do you react if someone make fun of your prophet? Upset? Of course you have the right to be mad... but, to burn down buildings and go kidnap some Tom, Dick and Harry to let out your frust and claim that it is justified because some small unheard of Danish newspaper published some cartoons??

Look, if you look at the cartoons, the artist was not talking about religion at all! The artist was merely poking fun at the terrorists who did everything in the name of their God.

A mockery of Islam? Yep... go march and protest against those terrorists who used the prophet's name in vain. It is those exremists who gave the Prophet a bad name.

I think Malaysian newspaper should publish those cartoons for people to see for themselves .....

Any of the 'great' corporate Cults deserve to be ridiculed and lampooned. It is such a sad fact that such a large number of humanity are still suckers for these 'mass hallucinations' and cannot break away from the all pervading brainwashing and mass delusion that has pervaded through the ages.

The reaction and pseudo-reaction from the other institutions is so ridiculous. Just put yourself in the shoes of an Alien from out of space observing this ridiculous uproar, all connected with IRRATIONAL FAITHS in stone age mumbo jumbo.

If humanity could only take a leap forward and step away from these great delusions; but the mass hallucination has been breeding itself for so long that for all these irrational suckers cannot see outside the all pervading brainwashing.

Really, none of it is news worthy. The idiots getting upset, can more be categorized like soccer hooligans who need and enjoy something to RAGE against; this is just another excuse to rage.

the muslims are being insulted, true. so are anyone who hold a strong sense of belief and principles.

but the west has a habit of insulting anything that moves! nothing is sacrosanct. when the holy things get debased, societies and communities become aimless, hopeless and futureless!

how do we move on? has the fragile porcelain vase of tolerance and respect been cracked and irreversibly broken? can anyone repair the dammage? is there any hope for the future?

big questions arising from some small caricatures.

wiki, bbc and many sites have discussions on the use of images... i refrain from posting the links here for fear of hurting sensitivities.

The issue here is NOT that we think only fundamentalists muslims are upset. We know ALL MUSLIMS are upset, and by right they should. I would too, if I am a Msulim. The issue here is the reaction of those fundamentalists Muslims - they had gone too far with violence of buring down buildings and threatening people. They even cry for blood.

I am just wondering: "If digital camera had been invented back 1400 lunar years ago (when Muhammad still alive), will he take picture of himself or his wives or have a family portrait?"

Posted by: loop at February 6, 2006 03:28 PM

If someone insults your parents, would you argue that the issue is not about the insult but rather how you react to it ? It is always easy to be objective and detached when you are not one at the receiving end.

No one here ever condoned any form of violence be it by the Muslims, Christians,Hindus, Buddhists, etc. We certainly wish to see sanity and calmness prevailing among our Muslims brothers and sisters despite the provocation.

I agree that the terrorists and extremists have affected the image of Islam in the eyes of the non Muslims. And they are rightly despised by all right-thinking Muslims and non Muslims.

However there non Muslim political leaders who have caused the deaths of far more civilians than any Muslim terrorist. If we demand that the Muslim terrorists to be put to trial then by the same token these political leaders too must be also brought to the court of justice.

so what do you think of UMNO-reform website.

I think this is all done in bad taste but coming from a muslim is even worse. Don't you agree?

The whole issue of the cartoons has been blown out of proportion. One does not need images drawn to belief in God even if it resembles one as God is infinite.

The muslim world must not react violently but find peaceful ways to educate those who are ignorant of other people's belief.

Burning, screaming, pelting other fellow muslim law enforcers with stones, stomping on cloth with drawings of a country's flag and so forth, does not heal anything but allow the non muslim zealots to say" Look , they are all terrorists, their religion has no peace as they practise peace by violence" this is the kind of message that has been shown round the world.

Right or wrong, one must not take the law in one's own hand where religion is concerned, show love and brotherhood and you will see peace reciprocated. I am sad that many lives were lost just because of cartoons drawn with man made pens and pencil.

Regarding Jeff Ooi, YES YES, he is one spoilt brat who believes that he can get away with anything by having his own BLOG. When YB Datuk Kayveas exposed Dato Lee Hwa Beng, the Adun of Subang Jaya, and challenged him to declare all his assets, Jeff Ooi just kept SILENT lah, WHY ?? because , cronni MAH, cronni.... If one challenges him, he will write nasty things and he things he can get away with it. Just look at what he writes on the reporters of NST and its CHief Mr.Kallimullah ( sorry if the name wrong, please do not burn FLAGS, OK ) He has an EGO bigger them himself and thinks he is transparent,
He is one frustrated individual who will not get a job in any leading newspaper even as a door boy.
