Nano Nano: Unearthly Prices
The iPod nano, quite frankly, is drop-dead gorgeous.
But here's something about the latest must-have from Apple that'll also make you drop dead.
Check out the price of the 2GB model at the Apple Malaysia website: RM969.
Now go to the Apple Singapore online store, and you'll see the iPod nano 4GB model (that's right, 4GB, not 2GB) priced at S$438, which when converted to Malaysian ringgit at today's exchange rates, is about RM980.
Think about: For just RM11 more, you can get in Singapore an iPod nano with twice the storage than the one in Malaysia.
The 4GB model in Malaysia goes for RM1,216, while the 2GB model in Singapore is only about RM780.
Which means that in this country, you pay RM189 more for the 2GB model, and a whopping RM236 more for the 4GB model.
Ain't that so typical?
So the question is: Who's fucking us up here in Malaysia - Apple or Customs?

Singapore got GST

As such you can even get a 5% "discount" as a Malaysian buying it. Maybe is quibbling but to me RM 40 is quite a lot of $$$$ :)

probably the the 438 price figure you're talking about is not including tax, most goods in malaysia already have a built-in tax in the price...btw ipod prices between the US and Canada are also slightly different.... about 10-15 dollars difference...

iPods here are classified as music equipment, and it is slapped with 21% tax.

Ok, since most consumer products in Malaysia have been included with taxes, just make sure that the prices do no become obviously ridiculous when GST is implemented. Please make a market survey of this issue.

Unfortunately the ipod is classified as a music device and as such the levy is very high at 21% tax, which is a terrible thing for all of us who would like to own one.
I understand from someone in customs that when Apple first brought the product into Malaysia, Apple had classified it as a computer device but customs thought otherwise.
Perhaps we'll see something different about taxes for music devices in today's budget, or if the customs will reclassiify iPods
