Surprise

Here seems to be the man they ammended the Constitution for:

Court of Appeal judge Datuk Abdul Kadir Sulaiman was overwhelmed when he was informed last Friday that he has been appointed a Federal Court judge.

“It is the biggest birthday present for me,” said Abdul Kadir, who will be 66 on Sept 29.

Due to retire upon reaching that age, he was also surprised that he had been given a six-month extension to serve in the judiciary until March next year. [The Star: Kadir appointed Federal Court judge]

Only until March?

And why Abdul Kadir?

Maybe something's up. Or maybe it's not Abdul Kadir, but the person to be appointed after him, that is significant.

Any ideas?

Usually a gov servant is given a promotion just prior to retirement as a "send off". This ensures that his pension is just that little bit higher.

Possibly there is no "udang" behind this "batu" and they just wanted to give this chap his bonus to his pension. The question we then ask is in order to satisfy this expediency should the constitution have been changed? Does it in anyway reflect how much regard there is for the formal contract the nation is based on?
